Search Engine Optimization Works

By Brian Rooney

Top Ten Placement on major search engines is the "Holy Grail" of Internet Marketers everywhere. When your site is listed in the top ten results on a major search property like Yahoo, Google, MSN, etc... you can count on some serious quality traffic to your web site.

But the big question on every body's mind is "How Do I Get Top Ten Placement?"

The answer:

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Those three words usually strike fear into the heart of a webmaster. But with some simple planning, a little dedication, and a LOT of patience, you can actually get your site listed in the Top Ten of the major search properties. Of course, if you don't have a lot of time to learn the techniques and apply them, monitor the search engines for results, tweak your keywords, and manage your site, you may want to consider hiring what is known as an SEO Specialist to help get your site listed. Is it worth it?

As of the time I am writing this article, MySearchSite.net has been bouncing between #4 and #9 on Yahoo for the term "make money from home". This sort of activitiy has caused our Alexa Ranking to jump over 100,000 points in a matter of a week. And the best part is, my advertisers are gettng a better deal for their money with their existing advertising accounts!

When you begin to consider how you will approach your Search Engine Optimization strategy, it is helpful to look at other sites to see why they are listed so well. Then use those same techniques where you can and even improve on them where possible.

There are a number of key factors to getting your site ranked well with the search engines, such as:
  • Link Popularity: The more QUALITY sites that link back to your site, the more the major search engines will consider your site a valuable property.

Beware, though. Too many links from "link farm" or "junk" sites that don't provide real content and you can actually be penalized by some search engines.
  • Meta Tags: Some search engines don't rely on Meta Tags as much as others but this is an area where you can get some solid results from some careful planning.
  • Keyword Density: It takes a careful mix of keyword density (average of how many times your keywords appear in your web site to get the search engines to give you a prime listing spot.
  • Promotion, Promotion, Promotion: Once you have optimized your site, the next logical step is to let the search engines know your are there.
