How To Build and Profit From Your Own Lists

by Brian Rooney

In the world of Internet Marketing, I am often bombarded by requests from people that ask me "How do I get more sales online?"

Usually, they are asking the wrong question. If your offer is solid and your web site is making a clean professional presentation, you may still have the cart before the horse.

The reality of Internet Marketing is that the vast majority of people use the Internet primarily for research. They definitely purchase online but most of the time, it is only after they have done a good deal of research and comparison.

Customers want to feel good about their buying decision. And let's face it... as good as your web site copy may be, the only way for someone to feel comfortable with you is after they have spent some time with you.

This is why I constantly recommend to all my clients that they focus on building their own in-house mailing lists.

I'm not talking about buying lists from brokers or using questionable (or even illegal) tactics to build spam lists.

I'm talking about building your own in-house list of red hot subscribers that not only want your information but are actually looking forward to receiving it in their email box.

If you are already working on targeted advertising programs to bring you relevant and targeted traffic but you aren't capturing their information, the sad reality is that you are losing visitors and more importantly... missing sales.

Ideally, your site definitely offer solid information and a way for them to subscribe to receive regular updates from you. Regular updates could be in the form of weekly or monthly articles, periodic updates, special promotion notices, free training, etc...

The most effective web sites include great copy and a simple form where a visitor can enter their name and email address for more information or to be added to a special promotions list of some sort.

As an example, look at my own web site. The offer is very clear. We sell systems to generate, manage, and profit from your own in-houst mailing list. Right on the page, in the upper left hand corner, I offer a free report that shows my visitors how to fill their lists with red hot subscribers.

To date, over 4,000 people have requested information through that form.

I use that list of prospects to follow up regarding my primary offer. And when I have a new offer, a special offer, or an update that I think they might be interested in, I broadcast it out to that list.

Is it effective?

Using this same method, I recently built a list of over 250 subscribers that wanted to be updated when a new site was ready.

Sometime around 1:30 in the morning (YES... in the MORNING... I don't sleep), I broadcast the announcement to my list of subscribers and I had my first sale within 15 minutes!

Cost of making that sale: ZERO. I had already built the list through my various methods of advertising.

What methods do I use?

I've been known to use just about every advertising format available including:

More on those topics later!
